Shortstop Giovanny Alfonzo blasted a grand slam to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the eight and outfielder Quinn Brodey smashed a two-run homer to put the Fireflies ahead, 9-7, for good against the Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies) Saturday night at Spirt Communications Park in a South Atlantic League (SAL) game.
Alfonzo—son of former Brooklyn Cyclones manager Edgar Alfonzo and the nephew of present manager and Mets legend Edgardo Alfonzo—smacked the first grand slam hit by a Columbia player at Spirit Communications Park.
Reliever Conner O’Neil (W, 2-0) tossed a one-two-three top of the eighth inning to earn the win before the Fireflies mounted their six-run comeback.
The Fireflies matched their season-high with nine runs on Saturday while smacking 15 hits.
Jeremy Vasquez went 3-5, with three singles, extending his on-base streak to a SAL season-best 28 straight contests.
