The NY Yankees Pick New Jersey Prep SS Anthony Volpe in First-Round of 2019 MLB Draft

The New York Yankees didn’t have to travel far from the Bronx to claim their first-round pick in the 2019 MLB amateur draft, as they selected shortstop Anthony Volpe (30th overall) out of Delbarton High School in Morristown, New Jersey, Monday night.

Volpe has proven to be a potent bat in the Green Wave’s lineup in 2019, batting.488 with 19 extra base hits, seven of which are home runs, 34 RBI and 17 stolen bases, helping Delbarton win the NJSIAA Non-Public A North Championship. 

Additionally, the Watchung, New Jersey, native has impressed against tough competition, lacing a .459 batting average with 17 runs scored, 14 RBI and six base thefts in nine games, as the five-foot-eleven, 180-pounder guided the USA Baseball 18U National Team to a gold medal at the Pan-American Championship in 2018. 

Committed to baseball powerhouse Vanderbilt University, Delbarton head coach Bruce Shatel believes he will sign with the Yankees, according to the New York Post.
