Brooklyn Collegiate’s Sion Nelson was contemplating a move to either a year at a prep school (to improve) or entering the college hoops ranks after graduating high school.
Nelson’s playing time was limited because the Lions basketball team featured a lot of talent. But he made enough of an impact that SUNY Polytechnic Institute (Utica-Rome, NY) offered him an opportunity to play for its Division III Men’s Basketball Team, today Brooklyn Collegiate Tweeted.
“We were loaded with talent this season,” Assistant Coach Ken Hoyte said in March on BrooklynSportsWorld.com. “At another school, he’d probably seen a lot more court time.”
However, Nelson, whose twin sister played for power South Shore and is headed to Division I University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has shown scoring flashes. A solid bench player, he had displayed the ability to make an impact in big games this past season, including dropping in 17 points in a Lion 95-76 win over perennial powerhouse Thomas Jefferson.
In eight regular-season games, Nelson poured in 32 points and nine rebounds (4ppg and 1.13 rpg).
But people who followed the program closely, feel the 17-year-old has the ability to get even better due to his youth, as he acquires more playing experience in years to come.
