Izzy Moreno knew she wanted to be a professional wrestling since the tender age of eight years old. So, with her parent’s permission, she stated training for the squared circle not too long after that, including learning the unforgiven sport of mixed martial arts.
That all came to fruition for the 16-year-old high school senior on Saturday, August 12th, at Mission Pro Wrestling’s (an all-female wrestling promotion in San Antonio, Texas, owned by AEW star Thunder Rosa) Boling Point card.
That once little girl grew up and learned how to throw punches and elbows, perform dropkicks and crossbody moves, and speak on the mic.
Though she lost in her pro wrestling debut to Jazmin Allure, Moreno said it was an awesome experience.
“It went amazing,” the Orlando, Florida, native exclaimed. “I can’t describe how I felt. I was super nervous. But I proved I could hang with the best in Mission Pro Wrestling.”
The invite to Mission Pro Wrestling’s Boling Point card came directly from Thunder Rosa during an interview she had with the former AEW Women’s World Champion on Busted Open Radio, Moreno noted.
While people compare her in-ring character to WWE’s Bayley, Moreno, who wears Bayley-inspired gear, and took her grandmother’s maiden name for her pro wrestling persona, she adamantly said that she is her own top supporter.
Sure, the Bayley comparisons are fair. But make no mistakes, Moreno is her own girl, and wrestler, displaying an unrelenting work ethic in an untraditional sport that most people her age, and older, would not understand.
Pro wrestling is her passion, to say the least.
“This is something I really wanted to do for a long time,” she said of being a pro wrestler. “My motto is: ‘To be your own biggest fan.’ I will always be attached to Bayley. But I am my own biggest fan.”
Moreover, “I worked so hard for this,” Moreno added. “I worked so hard for my pro debut. “My preparation was insane.”
The hard, intense work included grueling nine-hour sessions at the Hybrid School of Wrestling in the sweltering summer heat of San Antonio, Texas, practicing everything from Moreno’s in-ring skills to her persona and swag into the ring, not to mention her overall conditioning.
“Coach Chris Marvel (one of her trainers) gave me the keys to the place,” she said. “He said ‘go there any time you want.’ I was there from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for several days a week. I worked on my entrance, my character, and worked out. Something I’m really proud of is the hard work I put in.”
As far as being a Bayley fan, whom she met as a kid at an NXT show, Moreno performs a Bayley-like act when the San Jose, Californian was a babyface. She even experienced a full circle moment from a little girl wearing a homemade Izzy Moreno tee-shirt.
“Before shows, I like to hand out friendship bracelets, to have as many friends as possible,” the 5-foot-4, 130-pound dynamo said. “When I was around the show, she came up to me, and I gave her a friendship bracelet. It made me so, so happy. I had Bayley tee-shirt made when I met her (as a kid).”
Moreno said she like to have a major pro wrestling promotion sign her to contract by 18 but plans to go to college first and major in communications.
Meanwhile, Moreno’s next show is this Friday, as she tags with David Kidd against Stud Stache and Kalientita at the Hybrid Experience’s Rock N’ Rolling show.
