You can refer to Long Island City High School (Queens, N.Y.) football as the “Cardiac Kids” after its 8-0 win over Jamaica (1-2) Sunday on the road in the PSAL A Conference.
The Bulldogs scored another late game touchdown — a pass from sophomore quarterback Timothy Hernandez to junior wide receiver Billy Fuiaxis, in which he jumped up and plucked the pigskin out of the air for the eventual game-winning reception with approximately four minutes to go in the affair.
The pair of Hernandez to Fuiaxis beat August Martin last week after hooking up in overtime for the 6-0 win.
Not over hyping the victory, Long Island City head coach Joseph Giardina put it all into perspective.
“Any win is a big win,” Giardina said in a telephone interview. “It’s a pretty competitive division. Billy was able to get the game winning catch again.”
But Giardina said you cannot discount the stellar overall defensive effort, especially from two of his two standouts: Justin Rodriguez and Joshua Canela, whom the coaching staff named as Bulldog of the game after making eight tackles.
Giardina believes Long Island City (3-1-1) is not the best team talent-wise in the conference but is the most disciplined and best conditioned, which should bode well for the Bulldogs as the season progresses. It should help them emerge victorious when it matters most.
