The Joe Giacchi head coaching era at St. Joseph’s University Brooklyn program began last night, as the women’s basketball Bears used a trio of players to rout Pratt Institute (0-1), 77-50, in their season-opener at home at the Hill Center.
It was St. Joseph’s (1-0) first game under Giacchi, who received double-digit scoring performances from senior Destiny Hurt, sophomore Kristen Donovan and freshman Mercedes Perez.
Hurt, who posted a double-double, drained a game-best 24 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. She also forced five steals. Donovan scored a career-best 22 points and added five boards and three assists while Perez, making her college hoops debut, contributed 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and four thefts.
But the Bears trifactor did not do it alone.
Former Bryant High School’s Shanna Bliss, a junior, made a game-best seven steals along with pulling down five boards and dishing out four assists. Freshman Domenika Sanchez, from Ecuador, added eight points and three rebounds in her first-ever collegiate hoops tilt.
St. Joseph’s Bears hosts Maine Maritime Academy tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at the Hill Center.
