The Skyline Conference has named freshman Mercedes Perez of the St. Joseph’s University, N.Y., (Brooklyn) women’s basketball team as its Rookie of the Week, the league announced today.
Perez dropped in 11 points, dished out five assists, grabbed four rebounds and added four steals in her first game on the collegiate hardwood, as the Bears defeated Pratt, 77-50, at the Hill Center in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, last week.
Next, the San Antonio, Texas, native enjoyed a 10-point, eight-assist performance Friday afternoon in a road defeat against Maine Maritime.
Perez averaged 10.5 points, 6.5 helpers and four boards in the two contests. The award is the first for the 5-foot-7 guard out of William Howard Taft High School (Texas) and the first Rookie of the Week selection since teammate sophomore Aaniya Telford earned the honor last January.
