In depth moves, the New York Mets have reportedly claimed catcher/outfielder/infielder Cooper Hummel and catcher Tyler Heineman off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, yesterday the franchise had announced.
The Mets will add both players to the 40-man roster, as it sits at 32 and 33 after the Luis Servino signing becomes official.
Hummel, 29, offers the Mets a measure of versatility, as he has played multiple positions, including first base and third base.
A Milwaukee Brewers’ 18th round selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, Hummel debuted with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 and played with the Seattle Mariners in 2023. He has slashed .166/.264/.286 in 227 plate appearances across 76 contests in his MLB career.
For Hummel’s seven seasons in the minors, he has put up better numbers: .264/.399/.443.
Heineman batted .237/.383/.316 in 47 plate appearances over 22 games this past year for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Blue Jays.
During Heineman’s four-year career, which also includes stints with the Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants, the 32-year-old has slashed .218/.297/.282 in 104 tilts.
