Today, the New York Mets have signed left-handed reliever Jake Diekman, per multiple media outlets.
Last season, Diekman, 37, posted a 3.34 ERA with 64 strikeouts with the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, but recorded a 2.18 ERA in 50 appearances with the Rays after signing with them on May 10.
The only concern is that Diekman had issued 6.04 walks per 9.0 innings, a 15 percent rate. Even so, he permitted a little hard contact, with the help of a fastball that tops at 98 MPH and other offerings that yield plenty of whiffs.
Diekman’s addition provides the Mets with a second lefty, as well as Brooks Raley, in the bullpen.
The Diekman signing has the makings of being a quality pick up for the team. So, we will see how it all shakes out for New York with its latest acquisition.
