With 16 seconds remaining in the 2024 NIT championship, Seton Hall’s Dre Davis scored the game-winning layup to give the Pirates a 79-77 lead over Indiana State.
Seton Hall survived a flurry of last-second wild attempts by the Sycamores (32-7) to secure its second NIT title in program history and first since 1953.
A pair of local products led the Pirates (25-12) to the NIT promise land. Newark’s Al-Amir Dawes drained a game-best 24 points, while Brooklyn’s Kadary Richmond, a former star at South Shore High School, contributed a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Davis, who hails from Indianapolis, Ind., added 18 points in the win.
Seton Hall’s tenacious defensive proved to be one of the big differences in the title, as it scored 20 points off of 15 Indiana State turnovers. Plus, the Pirates shot an impressive 89 percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe.
