Luke Ritter: Prospect Worth Watching for the New York Mets

Luke Ritter is making it awfully hard for the New York Mets not to notice him and his raw power.

The infielder has enjoyed two two-home run games in the last three days, giving him a total of 16 for the season along with 50 RBI and a .267 batting average. Ritter went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in Syracuse’s 9-3 win over the IronPigs this afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium.

Luke Ritter stays hot with another two dingers today.

Although not on the current Mets’ top 30 prospect watch list, Ritter’s torrid hot streak warrants serious consideration from New York.

The issue is, where do you put him on the field? Ritter plays first, second and third base, so that type of versatility works in his favor.

However, to make room on the Mets’ roster, do you send down DJ Stewart, who has been struggling at the plate, to the tune of .176, and has options? Or do you take a wait-and-see approach to see how the Mets’ playoff chances playout as the trade deadline nears closer on July 31st? If New York tanks and become sellers, then Met fans may see him in August.

If it was me, of course it is not, I would strike while the iron is hot, and bring him up to “The Show” in short course. The Mets could use an infusion of power and energy.

After New York selected Ritter in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft out of Wichita State University, he did not exactly light it up. But over the last two seasons, he has totaled 43 longballs and 114 RBI between Syracuse and Binghamton (Double-A).

While he is not as highly regarded in the Mets’ minor league system as other players right now, the 27-year-old has done enough in Triple-A thus far this season to earn a promotion.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out for Ritter and the Mets. Until then, watch out for his moon shots at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse and beyond.
