With the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 MLB Amateur Draft, the New York Mets selected right fielder/pitcher Carson Benge out of Oklahoma State University (OSU) baseball program.
Benge–a Yukon, Oklahoma, native–slugged .335 with 18 home runs, 64 RBI, 49 walks and 10 stole bases in 248 at bats in 61 games this past season with the Cowboys.
Though the 21-year-old struck out 51 times, he did slash an impressive .444/.665/1.109 in his second year at OSU.
Benge’s two-year numbers as a Cowboy totaled 25 longballs, 107 RBI and a .339 average with a slash line of .455/.609/1.064.
As a right-handed pitcher, Benge posted a 3-2 record with a 3.16 ERA, four saves and 44 strikeouts in 37.0 innings of work in 18 contests, four of which were starts.
He can reach 97 mph on the radar gun and sports a filthy slider, according to scouts, but baseball insiders believe he projects as everyday position player.
However, the Mets already have a two-way player in Nolan McLean, an outfielder/pitcher now with Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies who also played at OSU.
So, it will be interesting to see what New York does with Benge to start his professional career, if it does sign him.
