Trailing 6-0 to the Daytona Tortugas (Cincinnati Reds/55-56) after six innings, the low-level Single-A St. Lucie Mets (39 – 73) staged an improbable comeback.
The Mets scored seven unanswered runs the rest of the way to edge Daytona, 7-6, Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
St. Lucie cut the deficit to 6-3 in the sixth inning, with right fielder Eli Serrano III highlighting the frame by slugging a two-run homer and catcher/first baseman Ronald Hernandez driving in a run on a ground out.
The next inning, the Mets sent nine batters to the plate. Shortstop Yonatan Henriquez started it all with an RBI single that made it 6-4. Hernandez later belted a two-run base hit to tie the game at 6-6. Then, Serrano smacked the go-ahead RBI single to take a 7-6 lead.
Saul Garcia (3-7) tossed three scoreless frames of relief to earn the win. Cristofer Gomez did not surrender a run in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the save, his second of the season.
St. Lucie returns home Tuesday at 6:10 p.m. to face Palm Beach Cardinals.
