With the St. Lucie Mets (Single-A) trailing the Palm Beach Cardinals (74-44), 5-4, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, centerfielder A.J. Ewing rocketed a dramatic grand slam over the left-center field wall for an 8-5 walk-off victory Sunday afternoon at Clover Park.
Ewing’s bases-clearing longball capped a seven-run, come-from-behind improbable win for St. Lucie (40-78).
Ewing, the Mets’ 29th-rated prospect, also went 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while first baseman Yohairo Cuevas drove two runs with a double and scored a run himself.
Pitcher Christian Rodriguez (1-0) tossed four innings of scoreless ball to earn the win.
The Mets return to action Tuesday at 6:10 p.m., as they host the Jupiter Hammerheads (Maimi Marlins).
