Carson Benge, the Mets first round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, did not waste time giving the St. Lucie Mets a lead in the first inning, as he launched his first career professional home run to the opposite field to push his team to 2-0 advantage.
St. Lucie (41-78) went on to claim a 4-2 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads (61-58) Tuesday night at Clover Park.
Benge, New York’s No. 5 minor league prospect, enjoyed a productive performance, going 2 for 4 with the home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the win.
Additionally, second baseman Nick Roselli went 1-3 with an RBI single. Designated hitter and the Mets second-ranked prospect, Jett Williams, on a minor league rehab assignment due to his wrist, reached base three times on a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. Shortstop Colin Houck also drove in a run.
Righty Edgar Moreta (1-4) tossed six innings of two run ball with seven strikeouts for the victory. Reliever Layonel Ovalles earned the save after going two frames without surrendering a run.
St. Lucie and Jupiter face each other in the second game of their series at Clover Park Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.
