Long Island City High School (LIC/Queens, N.Y.) scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter of its game against Lafayette (0-1) Saturday afternoon.
It got the Bulldogs’ momentum going and they never let up, as they chomped their way to a 32-6 dominate performance in their PSAL 2A conference season opener at LIC High School Field.
LIC head coach Joseph Giardina said he was extremely happy with the way the Bulldogs performed Saturday, stemming from a fantastic week of practice, to kick off the season.
“I was very proud of the way the guys played today (Saturday),” Giardina said. “These guys had a great week of practice and after last week’s win against Bryant, we knew what we needed to work on.”
LIC’s ground attack proved potent, rolling up 194 yards and three touchdowns in the lopsided victory.
Senior two-way standout Billy Fuiaxis hit pay dirt on a 20-yard touchdown rush and ran back a 63-yard punt for a TD. He also scampered for a 52-yard kickoff return and made three tackles on defense–an outstanding contest, indeed.
Senior Carter Dumas ran for 27 yards on two attempts and touchdown, while senior Josh Canela carried the pigskin three times for 80 yards and TD, a 42-yard four tackle-breaking effort. Junior Armani Johnson had one rush for 23 yards.
Additionally, Canela made three stops and had a sack, and Elias Morales registered three tackles and made an interception on defense.
With the win, the Bulldogs’ coach staff expects nothing less than an all-out effort from its boys, on the gridiron and academically going forward.
“Coach Rod and I hold these guys to a very high standard on the field and in the classroom; we believe it correlates directly,” Giardina explained. “Things are starting to click in the right direction for us this season.”
Next up is Petrides, a team that went to the 1A PSAL finals last season.
“Next Friday, we take on Petrides, who played in the championship last year,” he said. “Coach Olah does a great job with that group, and we are really looking forward to the challenge.”
For now, Giardina will give LIC (1-0) the day off Sunday, and return to the field Monday, to prepare for Friday’s 4:00 p.m. tilt on Staten Island.
“The Bulldogs deserve a nice rest today,” he said, “but we’re back to work Monday as we have a short week.”
In other PSAL football action, Lehman Campus High School outlasted Stuyvesant, 28-26.
Star Lion running back Sameer Thomas racked up 196 yards with two touchdowns and one receiving score in Lehman’s win. Quarterback Tristan Robson completed four of seven attempts for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Junior Aiden Bailey rushed for 61 yards on eight touches and a TD for the Peglegs.
