Week 2 PSAL Football Scores and Standout Players


Week 2 of Public School Athletic League (PSAL) football saw teams starting to make its move to New York City public school gridiron notoriety with big victories over its competition.

Here is how some of the PSAL football action shook out this past weekend.

Long Island City — 48, Petrides 19

The Long Island City High School Bulldogs continue to roll, as they beat Petrides (1-0), 48-19, Friday on Staten Island in what head coach Joe Giardina called “another great team win.”

The Bulldogs (2-0) complied 437 yards of offensive, with several players contributing to outburst.

Junior quarterback Tim Hernandez completed five of seven attempts for 162 yards and three touchdown passes. Senior Carter Dumas rushed for a team-best 123 yards and a TD, and senior Elias Morales caught a 41-yard touchdown pass.

Senior David McClain caught two passes for 108 yards and two scores, while senior Billy Fuiaxis rushed for 87 yards on eight touches with a touchdown and had a 53-yard punt return for a TD.

Senior Josh Canela ran for 77 yards on eight carries with a score, while senior Hatim Barry made four tackles and had an interception.

Panthers’ senior Ryan Alexander led all running backs with 136 yards and three touchdowns.

A. Philip Randolph — 30, Benjamin Cardozo — 6

A. Philip Randolph traveled to Queens and took care of Benjamin N. Cardozo, routing the Judges, 30-6, Friday night. The Cougars improved to 2-0 in PSAL league play, while Cardozo dropped to 0-2.

Springfield Gardens — 14, August Martin — 6

Springfield Gardens outlasted August Martin, 14-6, Saturday at Springfield Garden High School Field.

Seniors Johnathan Mallett and Brian Jr. Ali accounted for the Eagles’ two rushing touchdowns that helped lead them defeat the Falcons.

Springfield Gardens improves to 2-0 in PSAL league action, while August Martin fell to 0-2.

Lehman Campus — 30, Bryant — 12

When it comes to great New York City high school running backs, senior Sameer Thomas sits near the top of the list. He ran for 174 yards on 20 touches and a TD in the Lions’ 30-12 victory Saturday at Flushing Memorial Field in Queens.

Senior Jermaine Singleton contributed 50 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown, as well as a receiving score. Senior signal caller Tristan Robson completed nine of 14 passes for 65 yards, a touchdown and a pickoff.
