Jonah Tong Shines in Rumble Ponies’ Win; Removed from Tilt After Nearly Tossing Perfet Game

With one batter to go and after throwing 99 pitches, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A/Mets) manager Reid Brignac came out for the ball from starter Jonah Tong, the sixth rated New York prospect.

Tong came from within one out of firing a seven-inning perfect game. Not to fret, as reliever TJ Shook retired the next batter to persevere perfection in the Rumble Ponies’ 6-0 win over the Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies) Saturday at Mirabito Stadium in the back game of a double header.

Tong improved to 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA after striking out 13 batters in the victory.

Shortstop Jett Williams, the Mets’ second-ranked prospect, went 1-3 with a two-run double, while designated hitter Ryan Clifford, New York’s fourth-rated prospect, went 1-2 with two RBI of his own. Centerfielder Nick Morabito, the Mets’ 17th-ranked prospect, went 1-3 with an RBI.

Binghamton jumped to 18-12, while the Fightin Phils dropped to 8-21.

The Rumble Ponies and Reading take to the field again today at 1:05 p.m. at Mirabito Stadium.
