Chatham High School (N.J.) Girl’s Lacrosse team scored fast, early, and often, as it took a commanding 11-0 lead over Mount Olive at the half.
The rest of the tilt was academic, as the top-seeded Cougars completely dominated the No. 8 Marauders, 18-6, in the Quarterfinal of the North Jersey, Group 3 Sectional New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Group Tournament.
Chatham was able to set the tone early in the affair, as it forced the issue due to ball control. Additionally, the Cougars were able to rotate fresh bodies in and out throughout the game, affording playing time to non-regulars, while resting their starters a bit. It was fun and worked like a charm, head coach Helen McCutcheon Oliver noted.
“We had the ball 10 out of 12 minutes in the first quarter and really pushed our offense and made things work on our end,” McCutcheon Oliver told NYNJSportsWorld.com. “And we literally got the entire bench in this game, which is awesome. We played 24 kids in the game and had kids having a good time playing all over the field and doing lots of things, contributing in ways that we do in practice all the time.”
Chatham (19-1) came out like a house on fire, with goals from seniors Ashlyn Carpenter, Grace Hallahan (two) and Sadie Clarke, plus junior Annie Irish, to put the Cougars ahead, 5-0, with 5:05 to go in the first quarter.
Scores from juniors Peyton Furst and Nicolette Grossman, and two from senior Ava Cantillion swelled Chatham’s advantage to 9-0 with 0.13 in the first period.
The Cougars added two more tallies in the second quarter to take a 11-goal lead at the break.
Mount Olive (12-6) found the back of the net twice in the first minute and half of the second half to make it 11-2.
But junior Kylie Ferrero and sophomore Simone Claps registered two more markers to widen the gap at 13-2 with 7:35 remaining in the third quarter.
The Marauders added a goal of their own, while Grossman answered with her second score of the affair to run the game to 14-3 before Mount Olive banged one into the back of the net and closed out the third period behind by the score of 14-4.
The fourth quarter did not provide any surprises, as Chatham outscored the Marauders 4-2 to win going away.
Hallahan recorded three goals, while Carpenter, Cantillion, Irish, Grossman, and Claps all scored two tallies apiece.
Junior Jenna Scheuten led Mount Olive’s offense with three markers, while senior Maggie Tilves contributed two goals and an assist for three points.
The Cougars take on the winner of the Middletown South/Northern Highlands matchup Thursday at home in the semifinals at a YTD time.
