New Jersey’s AJ Lee Makes Dramatic WWE Return on Smackdown

When Becky Lynch cost CM Punk an opportunity at winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Clash in Paris 2025 in August against “The Man’s” real-life husband, Seth Freakin’ Rollins, it set the wheels in motion for a grand return of a former WWE superstar.

Last night on Friday Night Smackdown, New Jersey’s AJ Lee made her return to a WWE ring after over a ten-year hiatus, and came out to defend her real-life husband, Punk, whom Lynch had been verbally and physically attacking for a few weeks running.

Punk, who said he would not lay his hands on a woman, said he had someone who would. That is when Lee’s music hit, the crowd hugely popped, and she came out from the back and skipped down the entrance ramp, proceeding to enter the ring and beat the snot out of Lynch, who attempted to franticly retreat, all the while Rollins watched from a skybox from way above at Allstate Areana in Chicago, Ill., Punk’s hometown.

According to sources, Lee, 38, who looked to be in incredible shape, chiseled abs and all, has inked a multi-year, full-time deal with WWE, and will be involved in an intricate storyline with Punk, Lynch and Rollins–one that is sure to thrill fans of the pro wrestling world–for starters.

From there, the creative possibilities with Lee are endless.

Lee, who hails from Union City, N.J., is a three-time WWE Divas Champ, and the author of New York Bestselling book Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules.

Additionally, Lee is the executive producer and color commentator of ViacomCBS series WOW: Women of Wrestling. Plus, she is the co-author of IDW comic book series GLOW: Versus the Babyface and Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World.

More importantly, she is a tremendous mental health advocate and keynote speaker, was honored with NAMI’s 2018 Multicultural Outreach Award, 2020 Leaders of Mental Health Award, and sits on the Board of Directors for The Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior at UCLA.
