Sussex County Miners Announce Returning Brain Trust: Chris Widger and Simon Walters for 2026

The Sussex County Miners of the Frontier League, an MLB partner league, have re-signed field manager Chris Widger and assistant coach Simon Walters for the 2026 campaign, yesterday the team announced on its website.

Widger, with the assistance of Walters, has guided the Miners to the Atlantic Conference – East Division title in 2025, and have qualified for the playoffs twice over the past three seasons under his staunch leadership.

Widger brings a wealth of MLB experience to the Sussex County fold, having played 12 years in the “Bigs” with the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, and Montreal Expos.

Additionally, he knows how to win, capturing a World Series ring with the White Sox in 2005.

As for Walters, he is coming back for his 10th campaign with the Miners as an assistant coach. Also, Sussex County has named him director of player procurement, recognizing his long-standing impact on roster building and talent evaluation.

“Chris and Simon are first-class professionals who represent everything we want the Sussex County Miners to stand for,” Vincent Sangemino, general manager of the Sussex County Miners,” said in a press release. “Chris brings invaluable major-league experience and leadership, while Simon’s decade-long commitment, connection to our fans, and eye for talent have been critical to our success. Together, they’ve helped build a culture rooted in accountability and belief. We expect to contend for championships every season.”
