Angelo Gumbs, who the New York Yankees selected in the second round of the 2010 MLB amateur draft, inked a contract with the independent Florence Freedom Thursday, according to the Frontier League’s transaction wire.
Gumbs, a second baseman, played six seasons in the Yankees’ minor league system. While in New York’s system, he made it as high as Advanced A with the Tampa Yankees of Florida State League (FSL) in 2014 and ‘15.
The infielder played with the short-season A Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League (NYPL) in 2011, batting .264 with three long balls, 29 RBI, 11 two-baggers and four triples in 197 at-bats in 51 games.
Gumbs enjoyed his finest campaign within the Yankees’ minor league organization with the Charleston RiverDogs of the mid-level A South Atlantic League (SAL) in 2012, hitting .272 with seven home runs, 36 RBI, 14 doubles and three triples in 257 at-bats in 67 contests.
After his release from New York’s organization in January 2016, the Cincinnati Reds picked him up and assigned him to their FSL affiliate, the Daytona Tortugas.
The Torrance, California, native played two seasons in the Reds’ farm system, making it as high as Double-A Pensacola (Blue Wahoos) before opting for free agency in November of 2017.
