St. Joseph’s Bears Sweep Doubleheader Over Baruch; Improve Win Streak to 5

The Division III St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn softball team picked up a twin-killing in a non-conference doubleheader over Baruch, 14-3 and 4-2, at Rocco Torre Ballfields, in Marine Park, Brooklyn, Sunday afternoon, extending its win streak to five tilts.

In the second game, the Bears (6-1) displayed an embarrassment of offensives riches, as senior third baseman/catcher Ashliegh Hartwig lead the way against the Bearcats (6-2), with a 2-for-3 performance while driving in three runs.

Junior middle infielder Nicole Trani batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Senior shortstop/first baseman Alexis Buchanan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while sophomore utility player Arianna Heinsch scored three times, stole two bases, and laced a double. Freshman infielder Sophomore infielder Bella Hurtado delivered two runs in a 1-for-2 effort with two walks. Sophomore middle infielder Bella Gomez scored twice, stole two bases, drove in a run, and drew a walk. Junior outfielder Emily Burroughs amassed two RBI, a run, a walk, a stolen base, and a sacrifice without an official at bat.

In the first contest of the afternoon, Hartwig, Heinsch, Hurtado and junior catcher/third baseman Isabella Calabrese all finished the opener going 2-for-3.

Additionally, Hartwig drove in two RBI. Heinsch scored twice, knocked in a run, and stole a pair of bases, and Hurtado a slugged a double and scored once.

Autumn Poppett fanned a total of career-best nine batters in St. Joseph’s 4-2 one victory over Baruch.
