The Long Island Ducks have signed lefty MLB veteran Wei-Yin Chen, who begins his first season in the Atlantic League and 17th in professional baseball, today the team announced on X.
Ducks manager Lew Ford said he is excited to bring Chen, a talented hurler who owns a ton of experience at the MLB level, to Long Island.
“Wei-Yin has had an outstanding career and has excelled at the game’s highest level,” Ducks manager Lew Ford said on LIDucks.com. “We look forward to having his experience and knowledge on our pitching staff.”
Chen owns eight years of MLB service time: four with the Baltimore Orioles (2012-15) and four with the Miami Marlins (2016-19). The 38-year-old posted a 59-51 record with a 4.18 ERA and 846 strikeouts to 270 walks over 1,064.2 innings of work.
Also, the Tawain native spent several years climbing the bump in Japan with the Hanshin Tigers (2021-22) and the Chiba Lotte Marines (2020). He also pitched the first five seasons of his professional career in the “Land of the Rising Sun” with the Chunichi Dragons (2005, 2008-11).
Chen put up a 42-36 mark with a 2.56 ERA, 14 complete games, eight shutouts, one save and 591 strikeouts to 176 walks over 766.1 innings in Japanese baseball.
The Orioles originally inked Chen as free agent in 2012.
