Righty Oliver Ortega Joins Mets Minor League System

The New York Mets have added another low-risk, potential high-reward reliever in right-handed pitcher Oliver Ortega, today SportsNet New York (SNY) reported.

The deal includes an invite to MLB spring training with New York, according to SNY.

Ortega underwent two elbow surgeries in which he had loose bodies in the right arm removed, and then a bone spur in that same arm taken out, which kept him on the sidelines for the season.

Ortega, 28, has logged 45 MLB games over parts of three season with the Los Angeles Angles and Minnesota Twins. He posted a career 4.03 ERA and owns a decent 7.9 to nine innings strike out rate.

Ortega’s career minor league record stands at 18-24 with a 3.98 ERA while limiting hitters to a .229 average across parts of six campaigns.

Other Mets minor league reliever acquisitions include Kevin Herget off waivers, Dylan Covey, Justin Hagenman and Sean Harney in a trade.
