Senior 5-foot-9 stretch four Maria O’Connell of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Staten Island Diamonds 17U HGPL squad has verbally committed to Division II Caldwell University Women’s basketball program, yesterday she announced via X.
Additionally, O’Connell held offers from DIII Alfred University, Mount St. Mary College, Russell Sage, St. Joseph’s Brooklyn, Immaculata, New Jersey City, Mount Saint Vincent, and FDU Florham, per her X account.
O’Connell uses her size, strength, and leaping ability to gain inside positioning and shoot over, and around, defenders. She is also sports a sweet mid-range jumper. Plus, she is nearly unstoppable when she comes hard-charging to the hoop.
The Cougars posted a 17-13 overall record and went 10-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action in the 2024-25 campaign.
