I have eaten at my fair share of pizzerias since coming to New Jersey over seven years ago from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, an awesome place for pizza. They have ranged from good to fantastic. And Clemente’s Pizzeria & Cafe Italiano slides in as one of the best pizza joints in Union County, located in 430 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.
My girlfriend, Maggie, and I shared the Vodka Sauce and Margherita Pizza slices, as we took in the wonderful aromas permitting throughout the establishment.
Stepped in Italian tradition, the sauces on each respective slice were downright delicious, with a special tanginess to it.
Also, the mozzarella featured just the right amount of freshness and stringiness.
No wonder, since its tomatoes come straight from Naples (my family’s hometown), and its cheeses are sourced from Wisconsin and Italian farmers, according to its website.
The pizza crusts are crafted with unbleached, non-bromated flours, and baked with extra virgin olive oil, as the pizza makers cooked the crust to perfection, with a splendid snappiness to each blissful bite.
The Vodka Sauce slice took home my favorite, but it was a hard choice.
The Drunken Grandma and the Gombare Pizza (ricotta cheese, chopped tomatoes, Calamata olives, and pesto, but zero sauce) offerings are on my must-try list for our nest visit to Clemente’s.
As for the pasta dishes, the Penne Alle Vodka and Filetto Fi Pomodero (San Marzano tomato fillets sauteed with garlic and oil, and fresh basil) looked so mouthwatering, that I will have to bring my ravenous appetite along for the next time.
Hey, the Capaci Sandwich–breaded eggplant, sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella, Pesto, and balsamic sauces–with a choice of chips or fries, also caught my eye.
Hours: Clemente’s opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; Friday and Saturday–11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Closed on Monday.
