Is There Hope for Children Dealing with a Peanut Allergy?

For most kids, eating anything with peanuts does not present much of a problem. But for approximately 1.5 million children in the U.S. — according to the American College of Asthma Allergy and Immunology (ACAAI.org) — who suffer from a peanut allergy, the delicious snack could prove problematic and deadly.

An allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system misidentifies a substance (allergen) as harmful. What happens next is that you may experience symptoms, such as itching, skin redness or rashes, or even worse: trouble breathing and a sudden drop in blood pressure, perhaps even leading to death.

Fortunately, a Stanford University-led study in 2019 discovered that just one injection of Etokimab–an experimental, non-FDA approved anti–IL‑33 monoclonal antibody that targets interleukin‑33 (IL‑33), an immune‑signaling molecule that helps trigger allergic reactions–could stop the peanut allergy from occurring in highly sensitive people from two to six weeks.

Right now, the study has shown that 73 percent of treated people did tolerate 275 mg of peanut protein (about one peanut) 15 days after injection. After 45 days, 57 percent of the tested participants still showed no reaction to the same amount of peanut.

While the results are slightly encouraging, it may protect peanut allergy-sensitive people from accidental exposure, medical professional hypothesize.

At this time, further research is needed to determine Etokimab’s dosing, duration, safety, and which patients benefit most from the drug.

For now, to be on the safe side, try Wowbutter, a peanut-free, non-GMO, creamy vegan spread made from toasted soy nuts. Or SunButter, a brand of sunflower seed butter, which serves as a nutritious and allergy-friendly alternative to peanut butter.
