Bridgeport Bluefish Sign Former Brooklyn Cyclone, Staten Island Yankee Players

The Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League announced Tuesday that it has signed ex-Brooklyn Cyclone pitcher Rainy Lara and former Staten Island Yankee catcher Jose Gil for the 2017 campaign.

Lara spent the 2012 season with the Cyclones, posting an impressive 8-3 record with 2.91 ERA in 68 innings in 12 games, while Gil slugged seven homers and 37 RBI with a .242 average in 198 at-bats in 58 tilts in 2007 with Staten Island.

Last year, Lara spilt time between Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League (EL).  He combined to register an 8-11 record with a 5.16 ERA in 113.1 innings.

Lara, a non-drafted free agent by the New York Mets in 2010, spent a total of seven years in their system, reaching as high as Las Vegas in 2015 and ’16.  In 133 career minor league appearances (111 starts), Rainy sports 44 wins with a 3.66 ERA and 489 strikeouts in 642.0 innings pitched.

Gil, a non-drafted free agent by the New York Yankees in 2005, returns to Bridgeport for his 13th season of professional baseball and third in the Atlantic League.

Last year, the 30-year-old catcher played in 56 games with the ‘Fish, ending the year with a .314 batting average, three home runs, 35 RBI and 26 runs scored.

In eight years of affiliated baseball, Gil owns a .237 average with 40 dingers and 247 RBI in 1907 at-bats in 571 affairs.

 Bridgeport kickoffs its season against host Sugar Land Skeeters on Friday, April 21st at 8:05 p.m.
