After spendingĀ parts of five seasons in the minor leagues, former Grand Street Campus High School (Brooklyn) baseball players Williams Jerez made his major league debut for the Los Angeles Anaheim AngelsĀ Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers.Ā
Jerez, whom the Angels acquired at the trading deadline from the BostonĀ Red Sox, tossed two scorelessĀ innings of relief, surrendering aĀ hit and striking out one batter. He followed that up with another inning of no runs allowed versus the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.Ā
The left-hander had a 3.62 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 72 strikeouts over 54.2 frames at the Triple-A level this season. TheĀ former outfielder, Jerez, 26,Ā was converted to the mound during extended spring training in 2014.Ā The Red Sox selected Jerez in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft.Ā
In Jerez’s senior year with the Wolves, he was the No. 1 ratedĀ prospect in the New York City area. The Dominican-bornĀ playerĀ hit .692 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 52 at-bats in 16 games in ’11.Ā
