August Martin Rolls Past AP Randolph with 24-6 Win

On the heels of a lopsided win in August Martin football program’s first game since 2013, the Falcons wanted to keep their momentum going into the second week of the PSAL Cup Conference. 

August Martin (2-0) did just that as it used two rushing touchdowns by running back Ashton Glasgow and two by the passing combination of quarterback Tyler Parham (3-9, 60 yards) and receiver Shavar Thomson to upend A. Philip Randolph, 24-6, Saturday afternoon at Springfield Gardens High School field.   

Sure, the Falcons handled their business, but head coach Kyle Allen said they had a flat week of practice, which matched there sub-par first half performance, in which they led, 12-6, going into the locker room. 

So, he emphasized to his boys, that they need to avoid a bad practice week, so it doesn’t bleed into game day. But he chalked their mistakes up to growing pains.

“We were very flat in the first half. We had a flat week of practice,” Allen told BrooklynSportsWorld.com after the game. “They’re still in learning phases, so they don’t know how to prepare on game day. They don’t know what its like to have a flat week of practice, how it affects you in the game. All of these are learning experiences.”

Glasgow put August Martin on the board with a running score to give the squad a 6-0 advantage in the first quarter. After the Cougars (0-2) tied it at 6-6 with a touchdown of their own in the second period, Parham connected with Thomson on a TD pass to pull ahead, 12-6, with a few minutes left in the half .

However, Glasgow extended the Falcons’ lead on a misdirection rushing play, which resulted in a 11-yard score and 18-6 lead early in the third period. 

August Martin’s defense made several good plays as well. Senior Bryan Seudatt recovered a fumble at A.P. Randolph’s 38-yard line, giving the Falcons solid field position.  

After a few running running plays, Tyler found Thomson in the flat for a 20-yard touchdown catch, extending August Martin’s advantage to 24-6 late in the fourth quarter, and it stayed that way for the rest of the affair. 

Seniors Glasgow and Thomson are putting their optimal efforts forth in order to accomplish their best in their first and final season of football at the South Jamaica, Queens, high school. It doesn’t hurt them that they take pride and satisfaction in their performances, as well as the team’s.

“It felt great. When I get in the end zone, I’m not only scoring points for myself, I’m scoring for the team,”  said Glasgow, who led the Falcons’ ground attack with 113 yards on 15 carries.  “When I score, everyone gets hyped up, everyone hypes me up. So we all get in a good grove.” 

“It felt amazing. It was a great feeling. I felt really good inside,” added Thomson, who corralled two passes for 54 yards. “My teammates supported me. I made a promise to myself that I was going to score a good touchdown, I was going to do a good job. I’m glad it came out that way.”

Though the Falcons scored four touchdowns, Allen said they need to work on their two-point conversion play, as they missed all four attempts. 

“I’m not happy about our conversions,” the first-year August Martin coach said. “We left eight points off the board. It should’ve been 32-6. But when you miss conversion all game long, that’s eight; that’s another touchdown. We got to get those conversions.”

Roshaun Emmanuel led August Martin’s stingy defense with seven tackles, while senior Ricardo Henriquez and sophomore Nazire Blake Evans made six stops apiece, with the ladder recording a sack. 

In fact, the Falcons registered six sacks in all in the contest.  

August Martin will travel to the Bronx’s Mott Haven Campus field for a Friday tilt at 7:00 p.m.
