Former Brooklyn Cyclone right-handed pitcher Chris Viall retired from baseball after three and half season in the New York Mets system while the team inked Danny Hrbek to a contract off the independent Frontier League Evansville Otters’ roster on Saturday.
Viall was playing with the Mets’ Single-A Columbia Fireflies of the South Atlantic League (SAL), posting a 0-1 record with 9.55 ERA before calling it quits.
Viall, a sixth-round selection of New York in the 2016 MLB amateur draft, played with Brooklyn in 2017, going 0-3 with a 3.42 ERA across 26.1 innings of work in nine games.
Hrbek has joined the Fireflies and the team has activated him. The 24-year-old righty hurler has tossed two innings of relief in one game without surrendering a run.
Additionally, Hrbek has spent time with the Kansas City Royals organization, amassing a 4-4 mark in two seasons. He reached as high as full season Single-A Lexington in 2018.
