The Long Island Ducks today announced that the Pittsburg Pirates organization has purchased the contract of former New York Met infielder T.J. Rivera.
While with the Mets, Rivera enjoyed notable success, posting a .304 batting average with eight homers, 43 RBI, 37 runs, 17 doubles, two triples, and a .335 on-base percentage in 106 contests in the 2016-17 campaigns.
But like so many players before him, injuries curtailed Rivera’s success at the Major League level.
Enter the Ducks, who, in 2019, gave Rivera an opportunity to prove he could still play. The 32-year-old hit .270 with four home runs and 16 RBI. Thusly, the Washington Nationals purchased his contract on August 4.
The Bronx, N.Y., native went on to play in 15 games for the Double-A Harrisburg Senators, totaling four RBI, four runs, nine hits and three doubles.
Now, even before the Atlantic League season commenced, Rivera will get another chance at cracking a Major League roster.
