On Saturday, March 23rd, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., New York Mets legendary pitcher Dwight “Doc” Gooden will be making an appearance at SIUH Community Park for the Staten Island FerryHawks’ Hawk Fest.
With the purchase of two tickets, fans will be entitled to a free autograph from Gooden, whom the New York Mets will retire his No. 16 with a ceremony on April 14 at Citi Field, when the Mets play the Kansas City Royals.
Docter K, as fans came to know him for his propensity for strikeouts, helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox in one of the greatest moments in franchise history.
Gooden posted a 194-112 mark with a 3.51 ERA with 2293 strikeouts over a 16-year MLB career with the Mets, New York Yankees, Tampa Devil Rays, Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros.
Additionally, Gooden no-hit the Seattle Mariners as a member of the Yankees on May 14th, 1996.
A first-round selection (fifth overall) of the Mets in the 1982 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla., the dynamic Gooden went on to capture the National League Rookie of the Year in 1984.
That season, the then-19-year-old put up an impressive 17-9 mark with a sparkling 2.60 ERA in 218 innings of work in 31 games.
