Red Sox Acquire Ex-Sioux City Explorer Matt Lloyd in Rule 5 Draft

After spending two seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system, the Boston Red Sox have signed former Sioux City Explorers (American Association) first baseman/outfielder Matt Lloyd in the recent minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft, yesterday the league announced via X.

Lloyd, 29, spent most of the 2025 season in Triple-A with the Memphis Redbirds. He totaled nine home runs and 54 RBI in 83 games played. In 2024, Lloyd suited up for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and clubbed 17 longballs and 77 RBI in 121 contests.

The Cincinnati Reds selected the Canadian utility player–who can man second base and left field, too–in the 15th-round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Indiana University.
