Behind a season-best 19 points from Nicole Melious, Siena Women’s basketball (4-7, 2-0) defeated Canisius (2-9, 0-2), 73-56, at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.
Melious, a redshirted sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., made nine of her 18 attempts from the hardwood floor, while freshman Francesca Schiro chipped in with 14 points, three assists, and four rebounds. Plus, Valencia Fontenelle-Posson, a graduate student, scored nine points, grabbed seven boards, and made two steals in the game.
Turnover and rebounds were the keys to the Saints’ win. Siena took advantage of 31 Golden Griffins miscues to help secure the victory. Additionally, the Saints claimed the glass with 24 offensive boards, resulting in 22 second-chance points.
Siena will host Mount St. Mary’s at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1 at the UHY Center.
