The Savannah Bananas of the Banana Ball League have just made a big splash, as they have recently signed Derek Klena, a former Broadway star who had appeared in Wicked and Moulin Rouge. He has also been nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Nick Healy in Jagged Little Pill in 2020.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In addition to appearing on Broadway, Klena was a walk-on for UCLA’s baseball team after starring at South Hills High School in West Covina, Calif. He put up impressive numbers, going 10-2 with a 1.35 ERA in 72.0 innings of work as a senior. He also posted a 5-1 mark and 1.19 ERA in 40.0 innings as a junior.
Also, Klena has appeared on the hit TV shows Pretty Little Liars and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidth. If that is not enough, he won a Golden Ticket at Hollywood Week on American Idol.
“He’s got the perfect voice. It’s so musical theater,” Jesse Cole, owner of the Bananas and creator of Banana Ball, said in a video on X. “I want musical singers. That’s our vibe.”
After a tryout in Savannah, Georgia, Cole said Klena stole the show with his singing. Plus, he struck two former minor league players in his inning of work.
“For years, Banana Ball has been described as Broadway meets baseball,” Cole said. “And now, it’s actually happening, and the show may never be the same.”
But the show will go on in the Banana Ball League, with Derek Klena as the lead.
