It has been a tough start to the season for the winless Chatham High School (N.J.) softball team.

But things did not get much better, as the Cougars (0-4) gave up ten runs in the top of the first inning against Spartan High School (1-1) en route to a 17-1 four-inning mercy defeat to the Spartans Monday at Chatham Middle School Filed.

A Megan Smulewicz three-run jack was the big hit that highlighted the first inning outburst in Spartan’s lopsided victory, the first of the year for the club. Smulewicz totaled four RBI in the contest.

Chatham got one back after senior/pitcher Lexi Doherty doubled home a run to make it 10-1 in the bottom of the second frame.

But the Spartans tacked on three runs in the top of the third, and four more in the top of the fourth inning to swell their lead to 17-1 to evoke the mercy rule after four frames to end the game.

Spartan sophomore shortstop Avery Munier went 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored, while senior third baseman Kiernan Moore had two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Junior putcher Alyssa Curtin-Bratcher (1-0) tossed four innings of one-tun ball while striking out six batters and allowing three hits to pick up the win.

Though the start of the 2026 campaign has been fraught with some potholes, Cougar head coach Brett Picaro believes that his girls will get their opportunities to change their fate and pick up victories.

“Yes, it has not been ideal, but, at the same time, we have a bunch of games coming up,” Picaro said. “We have two more the rest of this week, and I want to say we have three of four next week. And every day, we come out and have good practices; the girls are working hard, and we’re pretty confident that we’ll start getting some in the win column, for sure.”

Chatham travels to Montville Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
