Top Food Adventure Places in NYC: Original Pizza and Souvlaki Spot

I have made it a habit to go on food jaunts when I am out covering sporting events in New Jersey and New York alike. Feeding my soul helps me feed my creativity while keeping the juices flowing.

Here are two wonderful places — Original Pizza and The Souvlaki Spot – that I came across while out and about in two of the five New York City boroughs.

Bon Appéti, and Opa, baby.

Original Pizza Address: 2351 Ralph Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. — Hours: Friday – Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 2a.m. Sunday – Thursday 10:30 a.m. – 1 a.m. — 718.444.5007.

What do you do when you are in Brooklyn? You do what the Brooklynites do, you eat pizza. I practically lived off of pizza when I called it my home, and why not? Brooklyn has the best pizza, bar none.

After an interview for a documentary about Paul Mormando, a renowned martial artist and my friend, I headed to Original Pizza. Original Pizza is located in Mill Basin, Brooklyn.

In business for over 60 years, Original Pizza–which Frank Fontana, Sr. first started–has been joined by the establishments second generation, his two sons–Sal and Frank Jr. The tradition is still strong and flavorful as one of Brooklyn’s top pizza places.

The beauty of the best pizza joints is that they refuse to skimp on fantastic, fresh ingredients. Original Pizza is a perfect example of that exact scrumptious ideology.

I dined on two pieces of pizza: The Original Supreme Napolitan — homemade fresh mozzarella, Romano cheese, fresh basil, and crushed tomatoes, and The Grandma Sicilian — a thin-crust, fresh mozzarella, plum tomatoes, a touch of fresh garlic, grated Romano cheese, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil.

The sauce on both offerings was outstanding–bursting with fresh tomato flavor. The Mootz on the Grandma was supple and smooth, the thin curst owned a subtle yet snappy crunch, with the basil, garlic, and cheese laying on top of the pizza helped tie it all together. It was a delicious delight.

As for the Original, I could not wait to bite into it. It was just as awesome as it looked. The mootz, Romano cheese, basil, and other fresh ingredients set in part from most of the other pizza contenders I ever devoured in my life.

Finally, The Vegetable Pie — roasted peppers, onions, black olives, fresh mushrooms, spinach and garlic — is on my list for my next visit.

It was good to be back, Brooklyn.

Souvlaki Spot Address: 156-40 Cross Bay Blvd, Howard Beach, Queens — Hours: open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM. On Friday through Sunday, it is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Call: (718) 322-3021.

The Souvlaki Spot’s shrimp platter.

On my way back home from covering a high school football game in Queens, I made a pit stop at The Souvlaki Spot.

The Souvlaki Spot brings a bit of Greece to Howard Beach, Queens. Whether you favor souvlaki, hummus, or other Greek specialties, all made with fresh ingredients and packed with flavor, there is something for everyone who loves the Mediterranean fare, which, studies show, is one of the healthiest diets to follow.

I ordered the Shrimp Souvlaki Platter — two grilled shrimp skewers severed with sides of Greek salad with Greek salad dressing, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, and French fries.

First, it was such a large portion of everything, that I knew I that finishing everything in one sitting would be a challenge. But it looked so tasty, I was willing to give it a shot.

The shrimp was extremely succulent and flavorsome, and, of course, the highlight of the dish. I mixed and matched the tzatziki with the Greek dressing, as I smothered both all over the shrimp and fries for a change-of-pace flavor experience.

Speaking of the fries, they were crisp, tasty, and cooked to perfection. The Greek salad was the right finish to a wonderful meal, even though there was a ton of food left over which I brought back home with me. Hey, why not?

I would be remised if I did not mention other great menu items that I would love to sample in the future — Spanakopita (spinach pie), falafel platter severed with hummus, and the grilled salmon platter, among other dishes.
