West Morris’ Deacon Frayne Rolls Over Chatham Football in Big Win to End Cougar Weekend

It was just one of the nights for Chatham High School (N.J.) football, as it failed to stop West Morris Central’s Deacon Frayne, who rolled up 158 yards and three touchdowns on the ground enroute to a 28-7 victory over the home team Saturday night to close out Cougar Weekend.

But it was another running back, Brendan Dwyer, who complied 115 yards and a TD, that got the Wolfpack (5-0) on the scoreboard after he bolted for a 61-yard touchdown 2:15 into the game for 7-0 lead.

However, Chatham (2-3) responded when senior quarterback Ryan Hogan ran up the gut for a two-yard rushing for a 7-7 tie with 2:31 to go in the first period.

But Frayne hit pay dirt on an 11-yard TD run to help West Morris surge ahead,14-7, with 9:01 remaining in the first half.

The Cougars pushed the ball to midfield, but junior running back Yuki Stevenson fell just inches short of the first down marker on fourth down, turning the ball over on downs.

West Morris took advantage of the solid field position, marching the ball into enemy territory. Then, Frayne capped the scoring drive on a four-yard touchdown rush to swell its advantage to 21-7 with 1:40 left in the second quarter.

As Chatham struggled to mount any type of consistent offense, the Wolfpack did not. Deacon Frayne added an 11-yard touchdown run for a commanding 28-7 lead with 10:40 to go in the contest.

The Cougars moved the pigskin in vain, as they disappeared into the cool, rainy night in front of raucous home crowd.

While Chatham head coach Evan Picariello admitted to losing to quality squad, he said his team did not perform well on both sides of the gridiron, failing to thwart West Morris when it mattered most.

“They’re obviously a good football team. I don’t think we did a great job executing,” Picariello said. “We needed to be able to, obviously, score some points here. Defensively, I thought we got them into some good situations. They just converted fourth downs on us. Those are downs we got to have. We got to get this team off the field and give our offense the ball back.”

The Cougars host Roxbury Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
