The New York Mets made an interesting move on Thursday, signing veteran right-handed pitcher Dylan Bundy to add some minor league depth to their starting pitching mix, just in case they need to dip into their system for some help in Flushing during the season.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Bundy, a 2011 first-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles, will throw bullpen sessions and live batting practice in extended Spring Training until he’s ready to report to a Mets’ Minor League affiliate.
With Jose Quintana out due to injury, Bundy, 30, will join pitchers Tylor Megill, Elieser Hernández and Joey Lucches as depth pieces.
Bundy averaged 89 mph on his four-seam fastball last season with the Minnesota Twins. Though his velocity is down due to past arm injuries, he did post a 6-3 mark with a 3.29 ERA over 11 starts for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season — a performance that garnered him some American League Cy Young consideration.
However, he did not match that previous success in ’21, during which he went 2-9 with a 6.06 ERA. While Bundy has not experienced much sustained success lately, he did go 8-8 with a total 140 innings of work last year with the Twins.
All in all, it’s another solid opportunity for the Tulsa, Okal., native who was patiently waiting at home for another chance to prove himself.
“It was a long offseason,” Bundy said on Mets.com upon reporting to Mets camp Saturday. “I’m happy I have a home.”
