St. Lucie Mets Walk-Off Tampa Tarpons in Wild Finish

It took a broken play to give the St. Lucie Mets (Single-A) a 9-8 comeback, walk-off victory over the Tampa Tarpons (New York Yankees) Saturday night at Clover Park.

Catcher Vincent Perozo grounded the ball up the middle that proceeded to clunk off shortstop Roderick Arias’ glove. He proceeded to pick up the ball, but mistakenly threw it to third base instead home. That is when the winning run scored and kicked off the on-field celebration.

With St. Lucie behind 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth, shortstop Colin Houck, the New York Mets’ No. 7 rated prospect on MLB Pipeline, started off the festivities with a double. Designated hitter Ronald Hernandez, New York’s 20th ranked prospect, followed with a walk. Next, Jesus Baez singled. Houck stop at third, but left fielder Dayro Perez threw the ball away near home plate, allowing Houck to score the tying run and pinch runner Donovan Antonia to bolt to third before he scored the winning run.

First baseman Chris Suero launched a solo home run in the game. Baez went 3-5 with a run scored, while outfielder Nick Morabito, Mets’ No. 26 prospect, put up a 3-4 performance with an RBI and run scored.

Wilson Lopez (2-0) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

The two teams return to action today at 12:10 p.m.
