The Chatham High School (N.J.) girl’s lacrosse team game against Oak Knoll began innocently enough, wrapping up the first quarter with a tie score of 1-1.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! But the Royals (9-3) exploded for seven unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 13-5 victory over Chatham (6-5) Tuesday at home.
With Oak Knoll winning the draw control battle by a large margin, 11-2, and holding a decisive ball possession advantage, the Cougars failed to surmount that uphill battle.
“Oak Knoll has always had very long possession, and they had the ball very long in the game,” senior Leah Tapper said. “We knew that every possession matters, and we just didn’t capitalize on that.”
The Royals tacked on two more scores to extend its lead to 9-1 with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter.
However, the Cougars refused to quit, responding with two tallies, plus one from junior Simone Claps, who banged the ball home off a free position shot, slicing the deficit to 9-4 with a 1:50 left in the third period. Chatham added another marker to make it 9-5 with 21.6 to go in the quarter.
But Oak Knoll put the game away for good after burying four consecutive shots into the back of the net to end the tilt unceremoniously for the Cougars.
Claps recorded a total of three tallies and added an assist, while senior Peyton Furst and Tapper contributed a goal apiece.
Royal junior Genevieve Guenther, a Denver commit, was a one-girl wrecking crew, scoring three markers, a helper, and picking up nine draw controls in the victory. Senior Lauren Dietrich contributed three goals, an assist, and two groundballs for Oak Knoll.
