Wagner College Falls Short in ECAC Flag Football Championship Opener to Mount St. Mary’s

With flag football gaining momentum across the nation, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New York Jets held its first day of the Women’s Flag Football Championship on Saturday, May 2nd at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J.

No. 5 Wagner College (Staten Island, N.Y./Club Team) took on eighth-seeded Mount St. Mary’s in the first game of the two-day, eight-team ECAC championship.

While the Seahawks (9-3 in league play) put up a valiant fight, Mount Saint Mary’s scored first enroute to taking down Wagner, 24-13, Saturday in Morris County.

“We absolutely got growing pains. We have a lot of girls who are football knowledgeable, learning the football game,” Wagner defensive coordinator Anthony Martinez said. “Being in the right spot at the right time, as you see in certain spots in the game today. That have to be there, and that made a difference in that game.

“That’s a great team that we just played against,” he added. “They played good football; they had sound football. And that was the difference in the game today.

However, Martinex said that the Seahawks’ flag football program is looking bright, with several women who are growing and giving it all they have. ;leaving nothing to chance.

“We do have girls who are learning, and they do leave it all on the field,” Martinez said. “They play hard.”

After trailing 6-0 in the first quarter, Wagner freshman quarterback Sofia King, a Tottenville High School graduate and former flag football player, connected with sophomore wide receiver Makayla Lucas after she collared a tipped ball for a touchdown and 6-6 tie. Junior wide receiver Mary Wigren converted the extra point play for a 7-6 lead with 11:20 to go in the second period.

The Mountaineers retook the lead after freshman Arieon Stokes caught a long TD pass from Jenna Dick for a 12-7 advantage with 7:10 remaining in the first half.

With time running out in the second quarter, King completed another touchdown pass to give the Seahawks a 13-12 lead with 0.35 left in the half.

Mount St. Mary’s surged ahead for good when Dick threw for a four-yard score for a 18-13 advantage with 10:23 to go in the tilt.

The Mountaineers (9-15) put the game to bed after a touchdown rush dashed Wagner’s hopes for a late comeback with 0.48 ticks left on the clock.

In game 2 of the day, Franciscan defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 25-12, as inceptions doomed the Mount (9-16) in the end.
