Chatham Cougar Girl’s Team Dominate Randolph in Lacrosse Season Finale

It was of those games in which multiple players scored goals–eight, to be exact, as Chatham High School’s (N.J) Girl’s lacrosse’s team cruised to a 16-2 lopsided regular seasonal finale victory over Randolph (7-10) Wednesday evening at Hass Field at Chatham Middle School.

“It was a big team win,” head coach Helen McCutcheon-Oliver said. “Everybody got time on the field and had contributions, which we love. especially at this point in the season. We love to end our regular season on a high note. And then we go into state seeding meeting hopefully with positivity and a high seed. So, we’ll seed. I’ll be at the meeting, so I’ll know soon.”

Seniors Lilly Arps, Peyton Furst, and Leah Tapper recorded three markers apiece, while junior Simone Claps and sophomore Ava Hunter picked up two tallies in the win.

Junior Ellie Russo, sophomore Riley Furst, and senior Nicolette Grossman added a goal each.

The Cougars (12-8) outright blitzed the Rams with eight markers in the first quarter for an 8-0 commanding lead. Two more Chatham tallies opened up the second period before Randolph finally broke through to make it 10-1 with 7:44 left in the first half.

But the Cougars tacked on five more goals to swell their advantage to 15-1 with 5:19 to go in the third period.

Randolph found the back of the net again to bring the tilt to 15-2, in vain, with a little more than a minute remaining in the third quarter.

Russo capped the game’s scoring midway through the fourth period to put the tilt to bed.

Sophomore Abigail Alden and junior Olivia Stanco saved four shots apiece between the pipes. Chatham took a total of 28 attempts on net and scooped up nine groundballs.

The Cougars await seeding for the first round of the sectional playoffs which start next week. With a schedule packed with national ranked teams, McCutcheon-Oliver hopes that will taking into consideration, and is more that ready to state her case.

“It’s a bummer that they have to use the calculations that they use, but I am in the meeting, so I get, sort of, to fight for it,” she quipped. “They do power points, lax numbers, and there are conversations about strength of schedule. But unfortunately. it’s not weighted as heavily as the points themselves. So, we are hoping to be put in a good spot in our group and have a really competitive post season. And we would love to win out; we love to be home. We’d love to make it to group finally again. We’re hoping to be consistent for the next three weeks.”
