It did not take Hoboken High School (N.J.) football long to set the tone of its game against Glen Ridge, as senior running back Devin McMillan scored on a 62-yard touchdown run with 8:59 left in the first period.

Head coach Joe Borkowski said the atmosphere surrounding Redwing football has changed for the better. Moreover, it has been a blast to coach a great group of student-athletes who have been in control of its gridiron fate so far this season.
“We got a lot of guys with experience,” Borkowski explained. “We got great leadership, a solid group of captains and seniors. They set the standard, man. This has become an expectation, and tonight was a lor of fun.”
Next, junior fullback Algelis Reyes hit paydirt on a nine-yard rush, followed by a successful McMillan two-point conversion run to extend Hoboken’s lead to 14-0 with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Then, sophomore Aidan Ben-Meir tossed a 57-yard TD bomb to sophomore Chance Rivera to push the score to 21-0 with 10:32 to go in the first half.
Up next was Reyes, as he cashed in on a 22-yard rushing score to move the score to 28-0 with 5:16 left in the second period.
But the game was not all offense for the Redwings, as McMillian–a linebacker, too–thwarted a Glen Ridge drive by intercepted the ball at the Hoboken 18-yard line. Junior Samond Walker added another pickoff in the contest.
To cap the scoring, the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Reyes rumbled his way to a 75-yard TD run, which was his third score of the night. It swelled the Redwing advantage to 34-0 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.
Interesting note: four different players were behind center — Ben-Meir, McMillian, Rivera, and sophomore LJ Murray.
Plus, Reyes paced Hoboken’s defense with seven tackles, while McMillian and senior linebacker Izayah Johnson made six stops apiece.
Hoboken has arguably two of the top players — McMillian and senior Jae’on Walker — in New Jersey. But Borkowski added a third to the Garden State high school football conversion.
“Devin is playing awesome. Jae’on, we didn’t get him the ball too much last week. We put an emphasis on getting him the rock a little bit this week,” Borkowski said. “And I believe Algelis scored two or three touchdowns. He’s a really a hard, tough runner. And with them, it’s not really a two-headed monster. It’s a three-headed monster.”
The Redwings face Verona at home Friday at 6:30 p.m.
