SI FerryHawks Ink Former Yankee Infielder Wilkerman Garcia

The Staten Island FerryHawks have signed former New York Yankee shortstop Wilkerman Garcia for the 2024 Atlantic League season, today the team announced via X.

The 25 five-year-old has played in four MLB games with the Yankees, batting .400 with two hits and a walk in five at-bats across parts of two campaigns (2019 and 2020).

Furthermore, Baseball America ranked Garcia as the No. 7 international prospect in 2014, and at one point he rated as the ninth prospect in the Yankee’s organization.

FerryHawks manager Mark Minicozzi said he is thrilled to have the versatile infielder aboard and hopes to groom Garcia back to his old self in due course.

“We are excited for Wilkerman to return to Staten Island,” Minicozzi said via X. “He brings us versatility across the infield, and we hope to develop his skills that made him a Yankees top prospect.”

No stats for Garcia were found for the 2023 year. In 2022, the Hudson Valley Renegades (High-A) activated him from the 60-day injured list, and he elected free agency after the season.

Garcia, a Maracay, Venezuela, native, has spent a total of five seasons in New York’s minor league system, hitting .234 with 12 home runs while driving in 118 runs with 48 stolen bases in 1335 at-bats in 348 contests.

Staten Island kicks off the Atlantic League season on Thursday, April 25th at 6:35 p.m. against host Charleston Dirty Birds.
