Sproat Guts His Way Through Scoreless Pro Debut, While Clifford Slams 1st Homer of Season in Cyclones’ Home Opener Win

In Brooklyn Cyclone (New York Mets High-A affiliate) right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat’s professional baseball debut, he walked five batters on 66 pitches in 2.2 innings of work. But Sproat did not surrender a run.

Moreover, the Cyclones’ bullpen came in and slammed the door shut on the Ashville Tourists (2-2) the rest of the way in Brooklyn’s 3-0 home opener victory, its first win of the young season, at home Tuesday night.

Righty reliever Jordany Ventura (1-0), who picked up the win, tossed 3.1 frames of scoreless baseball. Righty Justin Lawson added 3.0 innings of scoreless ball of his own for the save. Three Cyclone pitchers struck out a total of 14 batters in the triumph.

Ashville right Jake Bloss (0-1) got tagged with the defeat.

Offensively, speedy right-fielder Omar De Los Santos went 1-4, and, after stealing third, he scored on an errant throw by Tourist catcher John Garcia to give Brooklyn (1-3) the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Infielder Junior Tilien went 2-3 with an RBI.

First baseman Ryan Clifford, the Mets’ fourth-rated prospect, contributed to the Cyclones’ offense by slugging his first home run of the 2024 campaign to cap the game’s scoring at 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Brooklyn hosts the Tourists tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
